Does the Aedes Mosquito Bite at Night? What Malaysians Should Know
Mostly no. The mosquitoes that spread dengue — Aedes aegypti above all — are active and bite during the day [who-dengue-day-biter], with bites peaking in the early morning hours and again in the late afternoon before dusk. A night bite in a Malaysian bedroom is far more likely the common house mosquito (Culex). But there is a real exception — an Aedes already inside a dark, quiet room will feed at night — so the practical answer is not “relax after dark”, it is “protect the daytime, and keep them out of the house”.
When Aedes actually bites
Aedes aegypti lives alongside humans and feeds when people are home and still: shortly after sunrise and again in the late afternoon into early evening. That is why dengue advice keeps repeating two unglamorous habits — screens matter for afternoon naps and evening porch-sitting, not only at midnight. Malaysian and Singaporean vector-control material describe the same two peak windows: dawn and late dusk, in daylight or dimness rather than full night.
So what bit you at night?
| Sign | Aedes aegypti (dengue vector) | Culex (house mosquito) |
|---|---|---|
| Active hours | day; peaks early morning and late afternoon | night, after lights-out |
| Bite feel | quiet, low-buzz | audible whine near the ear |
| Where it breeds | clean stagnant water in containers | dirty water, drains |
| Dengue risk | primary vector | not a dengue vector |
The midnight whine near your ear is almost always Culex — a nuisance, not a dengue carrier. Identify by markings rather than sound or size: our Aedes identification guide and size explainer cover the detail, including the myth of the “big dengue mosquito” — there is no big one; the markings do the talking.
Why some people do get “night” Aedes bites
- The Aedes is already indoors. A dark, still, occupied bedroom is a feeding opportunity an indoor Aedes will take. The bite lands at night; the mosquito entered during the day.
- The dusk stretch. On porches, balconies and gardens, late-dusk activity overlaps early night, especially in shaded compounds.
- Evening lighting. Indoor light can stretch activity into the evening — which is why early-night bites on the balcony are more plausibly Aedes than midnight bites under a blanket.
The BM companions answer the same question in BM register: nyamuk aedes keluar waktu bila covers the peak windows, and nyamuk aedes gigit jam berapa lays out the hour-by-hour profile.
What to change tonight vs what to change tomorrow morning
Tonight (fix the room): check screens for gaps, tuck the net for early-evening naps, run a vaporiser in a closed room for sleeping hours, stop propping doors open after dusk.
Tomorrow (fix the source): do the weekly container check in daylight — flower-pot plates, buckets, AC trays, gutters. Aedes eggs stick to container walls above the waterline and survive drying, so scrub before storing. The full routine lives in our home control guide.
When a night bite matters at all
The bite itself is not the emergency — transmission needs the mosquito to have picked up the virus first. Feel fine? Do nothing. If fever arrives, typically within a window of four to ten days after an infected bite [who-dengue-incubation], see a clinic and ask for a dengue test. Inside the illness, the danger signs cluster as the fever falls: severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums, unusual restlessness [who-dengue-severe-signs]. Those go straight back to the hospital.

Soalan Lazim / FAQ
Can I skip night-time repellent then?
For Aedes, most of the risk is daytime. But if mosquitoes reach your bedroom at night, something is already indoors — screens and nets solve that regardless of species.
Do Aedes bite through clothing?
They can bite through thin, tight clothing. Loose, light-coloured long sleeves are the practical daytime fix.
I was bitten at night and I am worried about dengue. What now?
Do nothing if you feel well. If fever arrives within the following days, see a clinic and ask for a dengue test — symptoms usually begin within four to ten days of an infected bite.
